Police identify victim and suspect in S. Refinery Street homicide

Lafayette Police have identified the suspect and victim in a Wednesday morning homicide on S. Refinery Street.

Police say on August 12,they responded to the 100 Block of S. Refinery Street in reference to a man lying in the roadway. Upon arrival, officers determined that the individual, now identified as 20-year-old Markeylan Edmond of Lafayette was dead.

The suspect, 42-year-old Johnathan Bargeman of Lafayette was on scene when officers arrived. He was taken to the police department, and interviewed by investigators.

Investigators say that an alleged verbal altercation between Edmond and Bargeman turned violent when Bargeman produced a handgun and shot Edmond in the upper torso. Edmond died from those injuries.

Bargeman was arrested and booked on charges of 2nd Degree Murder and Felon in Possession of a Firearm. He was transported to the Lafayette Parish Correctional Center.

The investigation is ongoing, according to police.
