LAFAYETTE, La. — The Lafayette Police Department has arrested two suspects for looting more than $1,000 in merchandise from kiosks inside the Acadiana Mall on Monday.
LPD booked Jamie Simar, 31, and Vaughn Savoy, 63, both of St. Martinville, into the Lafayette Parish Correctional Center each for one count of looting.
According to LPD, the two suspects entered The Acadiana Mall on Monday, Feb. 15 at approximately 7:30 p.m., which was closed at the time due to the recent ice storm hazard.
LPD say they believe that a door to the mall was left unlocked because there was no forced entry. The mall usually has 24/7 security, but LPD say it is unclear if security was working due to the weather.
Once inside the mall, LPD say the two suspects traveled to two kiosk businesses within the mall area. They forced entry into one of the kiosks and removed multiple cellphone cases, a bag of loose coined US currency and multiple Apple Air Pod Pros with a suspected value of more than $1,000.
The pair then entered a second kiosk where they removed several white t-shirts and one white hoodie of unknown value.
After leaving the mall in a vehicle, LPD says the two were involved in accident somewhere near the Cade/St. Martinville area.
Louisiana State Police worked the accident and noticed the stolen items inside the vehicle. When questioned by LSP, the female suspect admitted to theft.
LSP then contacted LPD and the two were transported for questioning.
They were then both placed under arrest for looting.
Both suspects are awaiting a court date and currently being held on a $25,000 bond.
