UPDATE: Lafayette fire investigators determined the fire originated in a fenced area attached to the exterior of Pete's restaurant.

The heavy black smoke seen coming from the building was largely due to an automated grease maintenance machine with two large grease containers for the kitchen fryers.

Only employees and food supply personnel utilize the area.

Firefighters responded to Pete's on Johnston Street just after 2:30pm Monday.
Crews confirmed the building was on fire and spreading to the roof.
