LAFAYETTE, La. — The Lafayette City Court announced on Monday that all court sessions scheduled to be heard prior to June 1 have been canceled and are in the process of being rescheduled by the court.
According to a memo from the court, the judges and staff are working to reschedule the numerous civil, criminal, traffic and juvenile matters that were postponed due to COVID-19 suspensions.
The Lafayette City Court says that its courthouse building remains closed to the public, but court staff are still working to handle court matters by phone, fax or mail. The court also said that the building is scheduled to be reopened to the public beginning Monday, May 18.
The court says it expects to return to a staggered court schedule beginning June 1. Legal delays do not start running until May 18, and there may be additional delays afterward.
The court says that social distancing measures will be in place when cases are rescheduled and the size of dockets will be limited and scheduled at staggered start times.
