The Lafayette Fire Department is still on the scene following a fire at an abandoned building near the Evangeline Thruway.

The building, located in the 300 block of South Chestnut at the intersection of Lee Avenue, was a former group home that has been abandoned for years, according to spokesperson Alton Trahan.

Trahan says that the fire is out but crews are still on scene

The Lafayette Fire Department's concern is now focused on the concern of collapse. The building still has some structural integrity by Trahan says it is still not safe.

The home will be tape it off as it is not repairable. Trahan says that calls have been made to the owner of the property and they will determine what to do.

Trahan also says that the home has been used by homeless individuals for years. No one was inside at the time of the fire and no injuries were reported.

The cause is under investigation.
