LAFAYETTE, La. — The Municipal Fire and Police Civil Service Board approved a request from Lafayette Mayor-President Josh Guillory to extend the position of interim police chief for another 90 days as the search for a new police chief in Lafayette continues.
The board approved the request during its regular monthly meeting on Wednesday.
The position, which is currently held by Lt. Scott Morgan, expires after 90 days.
According to a spokesperson with the Lafayette Consolidated Government, the timeline for hiring a new chief was pushed back when LCG reopened the search.
Morgan’s appointment would have expired before a new chief was named, so his appointment was extended for another 90 days until the hiring process is completed.
In September, the second search for a new chief of police for the Lafayette Police Department ended with six more candidates applying to lead the department. But, out of the six new applicants, only two were from out of state, which marked a total of 10 candidates up for the job.
In August, the board voted unanimously to reopen the search for a new police chief after only receiving four in-state applications.
That search was conducted from June 1 through July 1 of this year and resulted in the four applicants who were all from the Acadiana area.
Morgan has served as interim Police Chief since Mayor-President Josh Guillory forced out former Chief Toby Aguillard in January.
