We have new details about the threat made to Lafayette High last week.
The school was on lockdown all day Thursday, and neither law enforcement nor the school system would reveal what threat was received.
KATC Investigates made a public records request to Lafayette Police and learned that the threat was made via telephone to the school; the suspect told school officials if the school wasn't "cleared by noon" that there would be a shooting.
So far, no arrests have been made in the incident.
Students were locked down all day Thursday, but on Friday it was back to normal albeit with increased police presence on campus.
There was a scheduled drill performed Thursday on campus. Following the drill, the school received a threatening phone call and the school was placed on lockdown for hours.
Students told KATC they stayed in the same classroom all day, and they did not get lunch.
Below is the statement LPSS released on Thursday:
Lafayette High was placed on lockdown around 8:55 am this morning after receiving an anonymous phone call making a threat to LHS. The LHS crisis plan went into effect. The Lafayette Police Department along with the Lafayette Parish Sheriff's office were notified immediately. Law enforcement officers were dispatched to the school and took over the investigation. Students were safely monitored in their classrooms during this entire time. After the campus was secured, students were escorted to the restroom when needed. Due to the location of the cafeteria, we were unable to safely move students across campus through open areas to provide lunch. School and all activities will resume as normal tomorrow. We want to thank everyone for their cooperation and understanding during this event.
On Friday, LPSS released the following statement:
Lafayette Parish School System Statement Regarding Lafayette High School Lockdown The events that happened on the campus of Lafayette High School yesterday were concerning for everyone involved. We understand the frustration of parents, students, and staff when we are unable to share the details of events in order to maintain the integrity of ongoing investigations. In the best interest of student and staff safety, it is our duty to follow the safety protocols in our crisis management plan. Be assured, we will communicate with you during an event as quickly and efficiently as possible. Unfortunately, rumors and false information were disseminated and we understand that this increased confusion and concern. As we learned of misinformation, we communicated via pace calls to parents in an attempt to clarify and dispel rumors. We would like to thank local law enforcement for their quick response and actions yesterday. We would also like to extend thanks to the staff, students, and parents who remained calm and followed safety procedures. Our policies and procedures are in place to maximize student and school safety. Collaboratively, law enforcement along with school and district staff maintained high levels of safety and security for everyone on the Lafayette High School campus.
