A bill aimed at clearing up confusion surrounding cremation permits has passed.
SB 137 passed both the house and the senate unanimously. It's aimed at clarifying the state's cremation law and allow cremation permits to be issued even if a person died under suspicious circumstances “after the coroner’s investigation is complete.”
The Coroner's Association had lobbied for the change after KATC started asking questions about a widespread practice by coroners in the state. At tfirst we were told they would request an Attorney General opinion, but instead the law was changed.
Here's a link to Jim Hummel's investigation,"Body of Evidence." Our report was published in March, but the investigation began in January. The bill was prefiled in February.
