Welsh Police issuing turkeys instead of tickets ahead of Christmas

Police in Welsh are spreading holiday cheer in a rather unique way: they're flashing their lights and pulling people over.

This week officers are issuing turkeys instead of tickets.

"My hearts racing still, I'm like, 'What did I do? I know I didn't do anything!'" Elizabeth Fox said.

Fox quickly pulled over as she sees police lights come on behind her.

"This is not a criminal stop, I got a present for you," Officer Christopher James explained.

James gave Fox an early Christmas gift. A turkey, to spread some holiday cheer.

"Very good holiday spirit!" said Fox. "I think it's very sweet the Welsh Police Department is doing that."

"Between the two storms and COVID, people not working, we feel that it's something we need to step up and do," explained Police Chief Marcus Crochet.

Several local businesses paid for 20 hams and 20 turkeys for officers to give to unsuspecting drivers, including Abell & Sons, Golden Age of Welsh, 54 Foods, and 91 Stop.

Officers will be handing out the savory surprises for the next two days, but Chief Crochet says next week, the department plans on delivering cooked meals to people throughout the town.
