One young man is dead and another is in jail after a shooting in Welsh Monday.
Police Chief Marcus L. Crochet said Mykel Guillory, 21, was pronounced dead at the scene. Reginald Jackson Jr., 18, was booked with second-degree murder in the slaying.
Police were called to the 1200 block of West Railroad Avenue about 5 p.m. on Monday, the chief said. Neighbors told them that shots had been fired, so they went into the home and found Guillory.
Welsh Police investigators called the Calcasieu Parish Crime Scene Unit and Jennings Police for assistance, the chief said. That investigation developed Jackson as the suspect, and enough evidence was gathered to justify a warrant, Crochet said.
About 11 p.m. Monday, Jackson was taken into custody without incident and booked into the parish jail on that warrant, the chief said.
Welsh doesn't have many homicides, Crochet said. He took office in 2013, and since then there have been only five homicides in the town, he said. Four have been solved, and the investigation on the fifth, which occurred earlier this year, is still very active, Crochet said.
The public ensured that yesterday's homicide was solved quickly, he added.
"We had very good support from the public last night," he said. "This case was a mixture of good police work and good community support."
