Two people have been arrested accused in several theft of copper wire in Jeff Davis Parish.
32-year-old Kevin Dale Wilkinson and 29-year-old Kamlin Rae Cogswell, both of Lacassine were arrested on charges of felony theft, possession of a controlled substance Sch. II, possession of drug paraphernalia, simple burglary, simple criminal damage to property.
Jeff Davis Parish deputies say they were called out on Thursday July 23, in relation to a suspicious vehicle in the area of Hwy 101 and US 165.
Deputies arrived at the scene and say they discovered a disabled vehicle loaded with cut copper wire. After approaching a residence at Hwy 101 they observed a woman running away.
The home appeared to be abandoned, with no electricity or water.
The woman was located in a wooded area along with a man who was also allegedly hiding there. The two were identified as Wilkinson and Cogswell.
Several copper thefts have been reported in the area involving electric well pumps and radio towers. When questioned, deputies say the two admitted to the theft of copper wire.
During a search of the vehicle and camper, drugs were discovered, according to a release.
The two were taken into custody. Wilkinson also had an outstanding warrant for violation of protective order, while Cogswell was arrested on outstanding warrant for criminal damage to property.
