Troopers investigating officer-involved shooting near Lacassine

UPDATE: The Louisiana State Police Bureau of Investigations is assisting the Jeff Davis Parish Sheriff's Office to investigate a shooting incident involving a JDPSO deputy.

A preliminary investigation revealed that the incident occurred shortly after 9 a.m. as JDPSO Deputies and a State Trooper assigned to Troop D responded to a report of shots fired inside a residence. The residence is off La Hwy 101 north of Lacassine.

Shortly after arrival, officers encountered 56-year-old Jeffery Smiley holding a weapon outside the residence. Smiley was directed to drop the weapon but refused. At least one deputy discharged his weapon, striking Smiley.

Smiley was transported to Lafayette General Hospital for treatment. No other injuries were reported.

The investigation remains ongoing and active. There is no further information.

ORIGINAL STORY: State Police are investigating an officer-involved shooting that happened this morning near Lacassine.

Jeff Davis Parish Sheriff's deputies were called to a home on La. 101 at about 9:30 a.m. by a 911 call regarding shots fired.

Deputies and State Police arrived on the scene, and during the incident a white man involved in the earlier shooting was shot. He was air lifted to an area hospital. His condition is unknown at this time.

Louisiana State Police troopers are on scene to investigate the shooting incident by request of Sheriff Ivy Woods.
