GUEYDAN — The Department of Wildlife and Fisheries is celebrating a new whooping crane in Jeff Davis Parish.
According to LDWF's Whooping Cranes Facebook page, that whooping crane, named LW2-20, was spotted flying with his family on June 23. At the time, LW2-20 was 84 days old, which is within the age range of fledging for previous wild Louisiana chicks.
This new whooping crane brings the state's population to 76. LDWF biologist Sara Zimorski says not all of those birds are in Louisiana, as some have flown to Texas while another has gone as far as Oklahoma.
