Set up has begun, and the City of New Iberia has announced the closure of several roads in the city for the upcoming Sugar Cane Festival beginning this week.
Crews are setting up the carnival downtown today; events start on Thursday. There are dozens of events planned during the days of the festival. There are events focused on food, art, gardening, music and pageants. There's a street fair and even a tractor parade.

City officials say that several roads will close on different days during the week to coincide with the 78th Sugar Cane Festival which begins Thursday September 26, 2019 and continues through September 29, 2019. Crews have begun setting up the festival ground at Bouligny Plaza.
Below are a list of road closures for the festival:
Fulton Street, from Iberia to Jefferson Street, will be closed starting on Tuesday until Monday September 30.
Main Street will be closed from Julia Street to Jefferson Street on the following dates and times.
- Thursday, September 26, from 5:30 pm - 11:30 pm
- Friday, September 27, from 4:00 pm - 12:30 pm
- Saturday, September 28, from 7:30 am - 12:30 am
- Sunday, September 29, from 8:30 am - 5:30 pm
Main Street from Prairie Street to Jefferson will be closed at the following dates and times.
- Friday, September 27, from 5:30 pm - 8:30 pm
Main Street from Lewis Street to Vine Street will be closed at the following dates and times.
- Saturday, September 28, from 9:00 am - 1:00 pm
- Sunday, September 29, from 11:00 am - 3:00 pm
Indest Street, Jefferson Street and Front Street will remain open for traffic flow. Drivers are asked to be cautious in the festival areas through the weekend. Take alternate routes if possible.
