The officer who died Monday night in a shooting was a Ville Platte Deputy City Marshal, the mayor tells us.
Here's the statement from the Ryan Leday Williams, mayor of Ville Platte:
"On behalf of the city of Ville Platte, we extend our thoughts and prayers to everyone that was affected by this tragedy last night, and our deepest condolences to the loved ones and colleagues of Deputy Marshal Barry Giglio, who was killed in the line of duty last night. This tragedy is yet another reminder of the sacrifices men and women in law enforcement make each and every day when they put on their uniform and badge, not knowing if they'll come home to their families at the end of each day. Deputy Marshal Giglio's ultimate sacrifice in service of his community will never be forgotten. In closing, life is a precious gift that God affords us daily and should not be taken for granted, "The posture for our city must always be prayer, not just as a response, but prayer as a defense, we as a community have to pray in a way that dismantles these systems."
State Police are investigating a shooting that happened last night in Ville Platte that left a law enforcement officer dead, another person dead and a third in critical condition.
In addition to the deputy marshal, two others were shot. Both people, a man and a woman, were in the house where the incident occurred. The man died. The woman is in critical condition. A third person is in custody; that person was not wounded, state police say.
State Police have not released the name of the second man who died. We asked the Evangeline Parish Coroner to provide the name of the second man, and they said they would not release any information.
The shooting happened around 8:30 Monday evening in the 100 block of West Beauregard Street in Ville Platte.
Troop I spokesman Thomas Gossen said two people were shot and transported to a local hospital, where one died.
The law enforcement officer was pronounced dead on the scene.
A GoFundMe account has been set up by the Louisiana City Marshal's and City Constable's Association to help Giglio's family with funeral expenses.
This morning, tributes to the fallen officer are being posted on Acadiana social media, including law enforcement:
