Gas line problems in Mamou are affecting the town's current budget.
For the past 30 years repairs have been ongoing to fix old, galvanized gas lines that are rotten and leaking. Professionals have been hired to make those repairs, and Mayor Ricky Fontenot tells the Mamou Acadian Press that as repairs continue, more leaks have been found.
"We've been hiring professionals that are supposed to know what they're doing," Fontenot says. "All they're doing is finding gas leaks. As they find them, we try to repair them, and they've been finding tons of them. Hopefully we'll see a big difference in next year."
Although repairs several repairs have been made, Fontenot adds that there is still a lot of work to be done.
The town's CPA says the Gas Utility Department has seen a significant gas loss which has remained virtually unchanged from the prior year. He says even though the gas loss did not go down much from the prior year the town did significantly better in this department.
