The Evangeline Parish Sheriff's Office says a man is dead following an apparent murder-suicide attempt in Bayou Chicot.

Sheriff Charles Guillory says that on the evening of September 2, 2020, deputies responded to a shooting at a home on the 2100 block of French Street in Bayou Chicot.

Investigators say 47-year-old Brian Paul Soileau shot his wife once in the back and then shot himself.

The victim was transported to Mercy Regional Hospital and then to a Lafayette hospital. Deputies say the victim suffered non-life-threatening injuries.

Soileau was pronounced dead at the scene.

The Ville Platte Police Department was initially called out to the hospital, according to the EPSO. After receiving a statement from the victim, the case was transferred over to the sheriff's office.

Investigators say they are unsure as to what caused the disturbance which led to the attempted murder-suicide.

The incident is still under investigation.
