The Evangeline Parish Sheriff's Office has released their details of a protest that took place in Pine Prairie last week.
Deputies say that on Friday, August 14, 2020, a scheduled protest being conducted in the Pine Prairie area started out peacefully but then turned into a disturbance.
Authorities say the mobile protest which was using vehicles became a disruption when when those vehicles began obstructing the roadway (LA Highway 13/Veterans Memorial Highway).
"The protesters in the roadway were shouting vulgar and derogatory phrases towards local law enforcement officers when a deputy attempted to make contact with protesters as they yelled on a megaphone," a release states.
They say that when approached, the protesters attacked a deputy, disarming him of his means of communication and defense.
When an arrest attempt was made on the protester that allegedly disarmed and assaulted the deputy, EPSO says that other protesters allegedly interfered by releasing pepper spray and attacking nearby officers with blunt objects.
Officers only suffered minor cuts and bruises.
Deputies returned and used pepper spray on the crowd of protesters to regain control, EPSO says.
According to officials, an investigation is still ongoing and charges and arrests are pending.
