KATC is joining The Scripps Howard Foundation's "If You Give a Child a Book" campaign which matches children living in low-income areas with age-appropriate reading materials.
This year's campaign will benefit students at Alice Boucher Elementary in Lafayette.
Over the past four years, the foundation has donated more than 352,000 books to children.
According to research in "American Educator," how well a child reads at the end of third grade can affect the rest of their education. A child who can’t read at grade level by third grade is four times less likely to graduate from high school.
If this same child lives in poverty, 13 times less likely to graduate. The company’s mission is to create a better-informed world through journalism. By improving literacy skills for children living in poverty, they will be better informed and able to make better decisions.
