Two brothers were killed when they were pulled underwater by a strong undertow and swept away by a rip current while swimming off of Grand Isle Friday evening, WWL-TV reports.

The 8- and 10-year old brothers were caught in the current around 7:40 p.m. as they were swimming in the Gulf with their 12-year-old cousin.

Grand Isle Police Chief Laine Landry told WWL-TV that the brothers both drowned and the 12-year-old girl was airlifted to University Medical Center in New Orleans. She is expected to make a full recovery.

"The mother's boyfriend went out to save them, and he was taken under as well," Landry said.

The boyfriend remained in critical condition Saturday morning at West Jefferson Hospital. All the victims are from Houma, police said.

A 17-year-old boy from Hammond drowned in Grand Isle over Memorial Day Weekend.
