According to state police, a toddler injured when a car became submerged during a Wednesday morning crash in Ascension Parish has died.
Troopers say that 4-year-old Jason Molder of St. Amant died on Thursday, January 28 as a result of injuries sustained in the crash.
State Police began investigating the single vehicle crash shortly after 3:00 am on Wednesday on LA Hwy 429 east of LA Hwy 431 in Ascension Parish.
An initial investigation revealed that the crash occurred when a vehicle exited the roadway to the left and entered a canal bordering the roadway.
Upon entering the canal, the vehicle became submerged.
Several agencies were called to the scene to rescue the vehicle's four occupants which including the driver, another adult, and two children.
A deputy reportedly received injuries to his wrist as he punched the window to rescue those trapped in the vehicle.
Troopers say 4-year-old Molder was a rear seat passenger in the vehicle.
State Police say that due to the severity of the crash, seatbelt usage is unknown.
The driver and Molder both sustained serious injuries during the crash and were transported to a local hospital for treatment. The two additional passengers sustained moderate injuries and were also transported.
A toxicology sample was obtained from the driver of the vehicle for analysis.
An investigation into the incident is ongoing.
The Ascension Parish Sheriff's Office recognized the first responders who helped in rescue the victims of the crash.
