Interstate 10 in both directions reopened on Wednesday after DOTD crews worked throughout the day to clear ice from the overpasses extending from I-49 in Lafayette all the way to Baton Rouge.
On Thursday, the roadway remained open with traffic flowing smoothly from New Orleans to Lake Charles.
In North Louisiana, however, travel was a very different story.
Many roadways, including Interstate 20, remained iced over following Monday's freezing rain and snow. Bitter cold temperatures on Tuesday and the arrival of a second winter storm on Wednesday added to the closures and made travel more dangerous.
According to state police, winter weather has made roadways impassable due to hard ice accumulation.
Vehicles attempting to travel down I-20 have become disabled and troopers say those vehicles have caused travel on I-20 to come to a standstill.
State Police are asking those who need to be out on the roadways today to avoid the following areas on I-20:
- I-20 Eastbound in Caddo Parish near the city limits of Greenwood at milepost 5
- I-20 Westbound at the parish line of Bossier and Caddo crossing the Red River Bridge
- I-20 Westbound in Bienville Parish approximately 3 miles west of Arcadia
- I-20 Both Eastbound and Westbound east of Ruston
Law enforcement and DOTD are working to clear frozen roadways as quickly as possible.
For road closure information, State Police advise motorists to use the 511 phone system, 511la.org, or Louisiana 511 smartphone application.
