The New Orleans Police Department is investigating a shooting in the French Quarter Friday evening in which two officers were injured, one seriously.

Police responded around 4:30 to a call of an officer in need of assistance on Royal Street, according to WDSU. Officials say two officers were on routine patrol and crossing the intersection when a man in the back of a nearby Pedicap stood up and opened fire on the NOPD unit.

One officer was shot in the left cheek just under his eyes and the bullet is lodged in his skull, NOPD chief Shaun Ferguson said in a press conference. Ferguson said the officer was able to walk into a nearby hospital holding his cheek. He is in serious but stable condition and is responsive. A second officer sustained minor abrasions to his arm.

The suspect, who had fled the scene, was apprehended without incident by responding officers.

Police say they located a gun at the scene. They add the officers and the suspect had no previous interaction.

Ferguson said the suspect has not been identified, as he refused to provide information. He was transported to a local hospital for treatment after suffering a 'possible medical episode' at the time of his arrest.
