Eleven dolphins have been found dead in St. Bernard Parish this week.

Officials believe they may be suffering from freshwater lesions after the recent influx of freshwater with the opening of the Bonnet Carre Spillway.

Two dolphin carcasses were discovered near the MRGO and Lake of Two Trees last week, prompting local officials to begin soliciting additional information regarding expired dolphins from area boaters. The bodies of nine additional dolphins have since been identified, bringing the total amount of known dolphins in St. Bernard Parish to eleven.

Three living dolphins with symptoms of freshwater lesions have also been identified in the area in the last week. Anyone who encounters sick dolphins or the bodies of dolphins in the area are asked to document the condition of the dolphin along with information about where the dolphin was found.
