NEW ORLEANS – The Coast Guard is responding to an oil discharge near Louisiana’s Garden Island Bay.

Watchstanders at Coast Guard Sector New Orleans received a report at 3:52 p.m. on Friday from the National Response Center that approximately 420 gallons of crude oil had been discharged from a damaged saltwater disposal line at the Texas Petroleum Investment Company.

The source of the discharge has been secured. Environmental Safety and Health is the oil spill response organization. Two vessels from ES&H deployed approximately 2,000 feet of containment boom.

Sector New Orleans watchstanders issued a safety marine information broadcast over VHF radio channel 16 to alert mariners operating near or around the affected area.

Due to the level of vessel traffic in the area during hunting and fishing season, mariners who transit near the area are requested to heed the broadcasted notice to mariners and pay close attention to response vessels conducting clean-up operations.
