The president of the Lafourche Humane Society and another suspect were arrested Thursday after several horses were found living in poor conditions on property they co-own, the Daily Comet reports.

Pamela George, 50, of Cut Off, is charged with aggravated cruelty to animals following an investigation, the Lafourche Parish Sheriff’s Office said. Also charged in the incident is John Gautreaux, 56, of Lockport, the newspaper reports.

Police found more than a dozen emaciated horses on the property in question; one of the animals was dead before deputies arrived. Two more died and three others had to be euthanized, the paper reports. The remaining horses are being cared for now, the paper reports.

George’s lawyer told the paper she didn’t know the horses were on the property; she said Gautreaux is her ex-boyfriend and kept them there without her consent.
