West Carroll Parish – A North Louisiana woman was arrested after police say she passed out onto her 2-month-old baby causing him to suffocate and die.
Police say the incident occurred on October 22 in West Carroll Parish. Law enforcement officials were called to a home in reference to a woman found laying on her baby. Deputies with the West Carroll Parish Sheriff’s Office say that when they arrived they found the two-month-old child unresponsive on a sofa.
Emergency personnel checked for vitals but were unable to find them. The child was pronounced dead by the parish coroner.
An investigation by officials revealed that the child’s mother, Cynthia Sciortino, was allegedly under the influence of drugs and alcohol at the time of the incident. Deputies say she was the sole caretaker of the child. A search warrant executed by police allegedly found illegal narcotics and empty liquor bottles at the residence.
According to deputies, Sciortino allegedly admitted to using drugs and alcohol.
A blood sample was taken from Sciortino and sent to the Louisiana State Police Crime Lab for analysis.
Detectives arrested and booked Sciortino on two counts of Possession of Schedule II Narcotics, one count Second-Degree Cruelty to Juveniles, and one count Second-Degree Murder.
Sciortino was also arrested on two outstanding warrants for Jumping Bail and Cyberstalking. Her bond has been set at $1,109,000.
