The Louisiana State Fire Marshal’s Office says that two children were killed in a mobile home fire on Sunday evening in Belle Chasse. Three others were injured in the blaze.

Officials say that the two children killed in the fire were a 9-year-old girl and 7-year-old boy.  Their identities have not been released. The occupants of the home were attempting to escape when investigators say the children became separated. The two were unable to escape the home.

The three adults who made it out of the home are still in the hospital. Injuries sustained by those individuals include smoke inhalation and thermal burns from attempts to save the children.  A firefighter responding at the scene also received a minor burn.

The remains of two dogs were also discovered in the home. The Fire Marshal’s Office says that it appears that the home was not equipped with functioning smoke alarms.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation. Officials say it appears to be electrical in nature and occurred in an unoccupied addition of the home.
