Cattle Festival canceled - for the first time in 72 years

The Cattle Festival, held every year for the past 72 years, has been canceled.

Festival President Francis Plaisance said this is the first time in the event's history that it has been canceled.

We've had to postpone before, because of hurricanes, but we've never canceled," he said.

It was a hard decision, but a necessary one, he said.

"We can't go ask people for sponsorships when they're struggling. and to have a big crowd of people in one place, it's just impossible," Plaisance said.

The organization will have no events this year, he said, meaning there will be no banquet and no honorees. They're looking at keeping last year's queen for another year, he said.

It's going to be tough, he said.

"But we're just looking to have a bigger and better festival for 2021," he said.
