With the recent increase in the number of COVID-19 cases, SOWELA Technical and Community College has postponed the August 6, 2020 Commencement.
Spring and Summer 2020 graduates are invited to participate in the Fall ceremony tentatively scheduled for December 18, 2020 at 6:30 p.m. at the Lake Charles Civic Center.
“We feel strongly that our students need to be recognized in front of their families and peers for their educational achievements so we hope that our December commencement ceremony will allow this recognition to happen,” said SOWELA Chancellor Dr. Neil Aspinwall.
Originally, the College rescheduled the May 19 Spring Commencement Ceremony to August 6, hoping that the crisis would be in a much more controlled state.
Students who complete their programs of study by the end of the summer term will still earn their credential(s) and graduate even though they may not participate in a formal graduation. Academic transcripts will be available and diplomas mailed to graduates.
"The graduation ceremony is the culmination of all the hard work put forth by our students to pursue and successfully obtain a higher education that provides the means to improve lives. SOWELA's faculty and staff strive to ensure student success, and we are incredibly proud of the individuals who will graduate. These students are working hard to juggle the day-to-day complexities of life, and exhibit the firm determination to succeed. Their commitment to their dreams is what we want to celebrate," a release from the college states.
