Louisiana State Police say that one person was killed Tuesday following a three-vehicle crash on I-10 near Vinton.
Troop D responded to the crash shortly after 6:30 pm on Tuesday, July 16. The incident occurred on I-10 just four miles west of Vinton and involved an 18-wheeler and two other vehicles. Troopers say the crash claimed the life of 54-year-old Stephen Duan Bertram of DeQuincy.
An investigation revealed that an 18-wheeler was traveling on I-10 East when, for unknown reasons, it ran off the left side of the roadway. Troopers say the vehicle then crossed the center median and struck two vehicles traveling west on I-10.
Bertram, who was driving a 2011 Chevrolet SUV, was struck and sustained fatal injuries. He was pronounced dead at the scene. Troopers say Bertram was properly restrained.
The other driver, who was also restrained, received moderate injuries and was transported to a Beaumont area hospital for treatment.
The 18-wheeler driver and his two passengers, a 3-year-old and 8-year-old, received minor injuries and were transported to a Lake Charles hospital. Charges are pending for the driver.
Troopers say toxicology samples were obtained and have been submitted for analysis.
