SULPHUR, La. - Two people were killed Friday afternoon in a crash in Calcasieu Parish.
On May 8, 2020, at 4:15 p.m., Troopers from Louisiana State Police Troop D responded to a two-vehicle, fatal crash on LA Hwy 27 on top of the Choupique Bayou Bridge in Calcasieu Parish. The crash claimed the life of 48-year-old Corrina Anne Fontenot of Basile and 38-year-old Michael C. Vidrine of Eunice.
The preliminary investigation revealed a 2010 Buick Lacrosse was traveling south on LA 27, according to Trooper Derek Senegal, spokesperson for Louisiana State Police Troop D. At the same time, a 2007 Ford Focus, driven by Fontenot, was traveling north on LA 27. For reasons still under investigation, the Buick crossed the center line and struck the Ford head-on.
Despite being properly restrained, Fontenot sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene, stated Senegal. The rear seat passenger, 38-year-old Michael C. Vidrine of Eunice, was not restrained and sustained fatal injuries. The front seat passenger in Fontenot’s vehicle sustained minor injuries and was transported to an area hospital. The driver of the Buick and his passenger, who were properly restrained, sustained minor to moderate injuries and were transported to an area hospital.
Investigators say toxicology samples were obtained from both drivers and will be submitted for analysis. The crash remains under investigation.
Troop D has investigated 10 fatal crashes resulting in 12 deaths in 2020.
