One person has died after a fire at a Calcasieu Parish oil refinery Thursday, state police confirmed with KPLC.
The Lake Charles Fire Department responded to a fire at Calcasieu Refining shortly before 2:30 p.m. on Thursday, along with Louisiana State Police Emergency Services Technicians.
State Trooper Derek Senegal, spokesperson for LSP Troop D, said a preliminary investigation found that cutting was taking place on a stack housing that was damaged by Hurricane Laura. The cutting caused oil to catch on fire. A contractor sustained burns on 60-80 percent of their body and fell approximately 15 feet when the fire caused their harness to fail, according to police.
The victim was flown toward Lafayette General, but was diverted to Lake Charles Memorial due to his rapidly deteriorating condition, according to Tpr. Senegal.
Lake Charles Firefighters contained the fire, but remained on scene in case it reignited, KPLC reports.
Calcasieu Refining is located on W Tank Farm Road, about 30 miles south of I-10 in Lake Charles.
