A teenage student was hit by a vehicle while trying to get on her school bus Friday.

The Sulphur Police Department is investigating the crash, which happened on East Burton Street near West Mimosa. Police say the bus was stopped, with its lights and stop signs out, when the vehicle hit the girl as she was crossing the street.

The child was transported to a local hospital; a relative told KPLC that the child suffered a shattered arm, a collapsed lung, seven to eight broken ribs and a lacerated spleen. She was listed in critical but stable condition.

The Calcasieu Parish School System issued the following statement:

Earlier this morning, one of our students was struck by a vehicle while attempting to load a school bus. This is obviously a very difficult time, and our hearts are with our student and all families involved. The safety of our students, faculty, and staff is always a number one priority, and these situations affect all of us. As this is an ongoing investigation being conducted by the Sulphur Police Department, we will not be releasing additional information at this time.
