Calcasieu Parish Sheriff's Deputies provided an update Thursday night on the department's response to Hurricane Laura.
On Wednesday, August 26, prior to Laura making landfall, deputies escorted over 20 babies from a local hospital to a safer location due to the threat of storm surge.
On Thursday, after winds subsided, deputies were deployed to and answered 59 calls for search and rescues that were received while emergency services were unable to respond due to the weather. None of the complainants resulted in being transported to another location.
Deputies responded to one medical emergency at a residence on Highway 171 in Moss Bluff, which resulted in a 24-year-old male deceased from what is believed to be possible carbon monoxide poisoning.
