A box car filled with 200,000 pounds of tomato product was donated on Monday, November 2, to the United Way of Southwest Louisiana.

The donation, from Morning Star a California-based tomato processing and packing company, was made to help those in southwest portion of the state still recovering from Hurricanes Laura and Delta.

“We got a call kind of challenging us to send a couple pallets here and there,” Robert Henry, Morning Star representative, said. “We got more calls saying, ‘Can you give a little more?’ we said, ‘Of course, we can. How about a box car?’ We saw a need and we partnered with our good friend Union Pacific to make sure we got the product there.”

The effort, according to United Way, was a collaboration between Morning Star, Sierra Pacific, Union Pacific and the Port of Lake Charles.

The donation, which consist of products from enchilada and pizza sauce to salsa and diced tomatoes, will be distributed via 18-wheeler to the United Way’s Hurricane Relief Center in Lake Charles.

The Center is open Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
