Outgoing Vermilion Parish School Board President, Jean Broussard spoke to KATC on Thursday to explain why he is stepping down.

“It was a combination of all the negativity and all the fighting for a lack of a better term,” Broussard said.

Broussard’s announcement on Wednesday came as a surprise to the board and the audience. He’s been on the board a little more than a year, and now many are wondering why he is resigning.

“I would say I gave 100%, sometimes 110%. When I believe in something I get into it and I’m passionate about it,” Broussard said.

He said the decision came with careful thought and consideration.

“My heart was in it, and I really wanted this to be successful,” Broussard said.

Broussard said stress played a role in his decision. Stress is something he knows he has to avoid.

“Three heart attacks and a quadruple bypass, you need to watch yourself. You need to keep out of stressful situations. People are watching and probably saying ‘boy did he jump into the fire, that could be a stressful situation,’ but I thought it was something we could get past,” Broussard said.

He says he makes the decision with no regrets and with the love and support of his family.

“We all have to make choices in life and I’m a faithful man. During the moment of silence, I asked for Gods will to be done and I believe it was,” Broussard said.
