This week, Vermilion Parish is holding their annual Government Day for all high schools students in the parish.

The students have actually been gearing up for this week since before Christmas when they held elections in class for 16 different offices.

The top candidates from each school then gave speeches to win students’ votes.

The students were enthusiastic with many preparing fun and creative speeches.

Following the speeches, the students got to practice using the voting machines to cast their ballots for their favorite candidates.

This afternoon, the students participated in a mock crime.

Tomorrow, they will then hold a mock trial for the case with the newly elected officers performing their duties in the trial.

Tony Betts with the American Legion, who helps put on the event, says that after the students experience this all four years of high school, many get excited about politics and consider running for office in the future.
