A slow-moving weather system has dumped rain on St. Mary Parish this morning, leading to flooding in Morgan City.

“We’re flooding,” said Mayor Frank “Boo” Grizzaffi tells us. “We have major street flooding throughout the city. Every square inch.”

Grizzaffi said the businesses on Front Street took on water, he said, but so far there are no reports of water in homes.

As of about 1 p.m., the city’s pumps were starting to catch up “and we’re seeing pavement again,” Grizzaffi said.

“Some areas that don’t normally have water, have water sitting there today,” he said.

The system triggered a flash flood warning for the area.

The City of Berwick says that Country Club is shut down. Residents in the area are asked not to travel until water goes down unless there is an emergency.

Police say that citations will be issued to vehicles that go around barricades and push water into homes.
