UPDATE: Elderly woman booked in hit-and-run of elderly woman

UPDATE: An 81-year-old woman has been booked in connection with a Saturday hit-and-run in Berwick.

Joanne McDermott, 81, was booked with felony hit-and-run. She posted $1,500 bond and was released, Berwick Police say.

McDermott was arrested in connection with a Saturday hit-and-run that left a 71-year-old woman hospitalized with moderate injuries.

Late Sunday, Berwick Police and St. Mary Sheriff’s deputies said they had found the wanted vehicle at a Bayou Vista residence and had detained the suspected driver.

Berwick Police Chief David Leonard Sr. and Sheriff Blaise Smith thanked the public for their help in this investigation.

Berwick Police are looking for a vehicle that hit an old woman Saturday night and didn’t stop.

Officers were dispatched to La. 182 at Tournament Boulevard at about 7 p.m. Saturday, a post by the St. Mary Parish Sheriff’s Office states.

They found an elderly woman who was crossing the road when she was struck by an SUV traveling west on the highway. The vehicle headed toward Bayou Vista and never stopped, witnesses said.

The victim was air lifted to New Orleans due to the severity of her injuries, police say.

The vehicle was a light-colored Lincoln, possibly a white Lincoln MKX.
