A St. Mary Parish councilman has been arrested for allegedly stalking a Berwick woman.

James W. Bennett, 50, of Morgan City, was arrested on Wednesday, February 6 at 5:14 p.m. on a warrant, alleging that he was stalking the victim. Bennett is the St. Mary Parish councilman for District Seven.

The warrant stems from an investigation that began on February 1 in which a complaint was received, concerning him stalking a woman who lives in the Berwick area. Upon officers investigating the complaint, it was learned that Bennett was responsible for the behavior associated with stalking, stated Leonard.  Bennett allegedly used resources to gain knowledge of who was visiting with the victim and later confront them.

Bennett was booked into the Berwick Jail and later released on a $20,000 bond. He was later transported to the Morgan City Jail due to active warrants that Morgan City Police Dept. held for his arrest associated with this investigation, according to Chief Leonard.

Bennett was arrested in July of 2018 on a misdemeanor charge of remaining after being forbidden.
