The Breaux Bridge Police Department is reminding motorists to “Click It or Ticket” as part of the national seat belt enforcement campaign.

The department is taking part with other law enforcement agencies across the country to step up the enforcement of seatbelt use while driving. The campaign begins Monday, May 20 and continues until June 2.

Police Cheif Rollie Cantu says that his officers will be out patrolling during the campaign looking especially for instances where motorists may not be properly restrained.

The campaign comes before the busiest travel weekend of the year, Memorial Day Weekend, which is May 25 through 27.

Cantu says that the campaign is an effort to remind motorist to do the one thing that can save lives during a crash, buckle up.

In 2017 it was reported that around 54 percent of drivers killed in Louisiana were not wearing safety belts at the time of the crash. Statistics provided by the Breaux Bridge Police Department show that around 50 percent of fatalities belonged to children ages six and younger who were not properly bucked into child seats.
