A family with nine children is without a home after a house fire in St. Martin Parish on Monday.

Officials say the fire happened around midnight on Nanny Road just outside of Breaux Bridge.

Within minutes, the Brown family says the home was engulfed in flames, all as the family was settling in for bed.

“So, I’m smelling it and smelling it. I got up and saw all kinds of smoke. I tried to kill it with some water, but it got worse. I got some water and then it was climbing up the cabinets. I got the fire extinguisher, but it got worse and everything was on fire,” Kenyon Brown said.

Brown said he screamed to wake up his family and get them to safety, his parents waking to a wall of fire in the kitchen.

kenyon and his dad tried using their fire extinguishers, but they did not work. So, Kenyon’s dad rushed back in the home to try and save some of their valuables.

“It was my manly duties, my fatherly duties. We just have to now cast our worries upon God and receive his rest and peace. We’ll try not to worry about it as much,” Sekeiou Brown said.

As the family was escaping the home, the roof collapsed.

“Everything I worked for,” Lakeishia Brown said of her home. “It’s just hard. It’s devastating. Words can’t even describe. Thank God everybody came out safe.”
