The child’s mother, 22-year-old Chelsey Paige Wiltz of Parks, was arrested after deputies say she allegedly gave misleading information about how the shooting occurred.

An investigation into the incident determined that the child allegedly gained access to an unsecured firearm at a residence in St. Martinville and the gun discharged, striking him in the arm.

The investigation also uncovered illegal narcotics at the residence.  A warrant was obtained for Wiltz and she was arrested on Thursday and booked on the following charges.

  • 1 count Illegal Use of Weapons or Dangerous Instrument
  • 1 count Obstruction of Justice
  • 1 count Prohibited Acts; Schedule 1 (MDMA)

Wiltz was booked into the St. Martin Parish Correctional Center.

The two-year-old was treated for his injuries and released from the hospital.
