Bishop Douglas Deshotel made a surprise visit to St. Bernard School to meet with a young student and thank him.

This month, the Diocese of Lafayette sent out a request to find a young student Eli Johnson who had personally written to the Bishop and sent in a $1 dollar donation as part of the Bishop’s Service Appeal.

The letter from Johnson who is 8-years-old read, “All I can give you is a dollar, that is all I got. Next time, I will have another one.”

After some searching, Johnson was found at St. Bernard School in Breaux Bridge where he is a 2nd grader.

Today, Deshotel surprised his second-grade class and personally thanked Johnson for his letter and donation.

The Diocese of Lafayette says the money raised through this annual project funds programs including the education for Seminarians and Vocations, Catholic Charities, Catholic Education and many other ministries and services in the Diocese of Lafayette.
