BREAUX BRIDGE – When you think of music and Acadiana, you usually think Creole or zydeco, but one band is hoping to revive jazz.
Breaux Bridge native Sam Irwin and his traditional jazz band the Florida Street Blowhards made their debut at Teche Center for the Arts Saturday night.
Irwin, a former music major at the University of Southwestern Louisiana-now UL, sang in the Baton Rouge Symphony Chorus for 30 years before picking up his trumpet again after a 20-year hiatus.
The members of the Florida Street Blowhards come from all over, even as far as California. The band’s pianist, John Dupaquier, is an 89-year-old New Orleans native.
