Sunset shooting suspect and victim identified

Police have released more information on Monday’s fatal shooting in Sunset.

Officers say they were called around 4:00 pm to the 100 Block of East Martin Luther King Dr. in reference to a shooting.

Upon arrival, officers say they discovered Kendrick Lawrence of Lafayette unresponsive and suffering from a gunshot wound. Lawrence succumbed to this injuries.

After an investigation, 36-year-old Walter Savoie of Sunset was determined as a suspect. He was arrested and booked on a charge of Second-Degree Murder and Possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.

Sunset Police Chief Luis Padilla says that Savoie allegedly had an ongoing dispute with Lawrence.

The department was assisted in the investigation by the Grand Coteau Police Department and St. Landry Parish Sheriff’s Office.

The case is still under investigation. Anyone who may have witnessed the incident is asked to contact the Sunset Police Department at 337-662-5555.
