The mother of a man who was fatally shot Monday in Sunset says she forgives the man accused of killing her son.

Barbara Lawrence says her son, Kendrick, was shot while trying to keep a negative influence away from her grandson.

“He was trying to ask the man to not give my grandson drugs, and when he went to approach him, I guess…”

Kendrick’s brother, Kevin, says his brother constantly looked out for his nephew.

“Well, my brother didn’t like the fact my nephew was riding around with him, and he was going around shooting up the neighborhood and all kind of stuff. So, we were trying to get my nephew away from that,” said Kevin.

They say Kendrick escaped the streets and turned his life around after becoming a husband and father.

“He used to live a thuggy, bad life, but he had done given his life to Christ. He had done turned around to a good guy. He was working. He had a family,” said Barbara. “He was a good-hearted person. He would give you his last. He would go without just to give you, and he was always giving my grandkids advice. Sometimes, they would get mad at him, but he would still give it to them anyway.”

Kevin says he attributes his characteristics to his brother.

“He always ran me away from the trouble. It’s probably why I am the man I am today.”
