St. Landry Parish Sheriff’s deputies are investigating the home invasion of a Lawtell doctor, a spokesman said.

Deputies were called to a home on Depot Street in Lawtell early Monday. Relatives heard gunshots around midnight, and were awakened by barking dogs. They looked out the window and saw someone walking from Dr. John Vallian’s home, carrying something in their hands.

Vallian’s brother went to the home and found Dr. Vallian sitting in the hallway, bleeding. The brother applied pressure until deputies arrived; Dr. Vallian was airlifted to a local hospital where he is listed in critical condition.

Family says his condition is improving.

Detectives haven’t been able to interview Dr. Vallian because of his injuries, but are handling the case as a home invasion.

Dr. Vallian is a general practitioner and nephrologist who practices out of Opelousas.
