The Palmetto Village Council has called an election to decide if the police chief should be elected or appointed.
No one qualified to run for the post in November’s election, meaning the village would be without a chief when the current chief’s term expires.
If the chief was appointed, he or she could live outside of the village. An elected chief must live within the village limits.
As we reported last month, that was the problem. The village limits are only about one square mile, and many interested people don’t live within that area.
But it’s vital that the village have a chief – because that’s Palmetto’s only police officer.
